Well I didn’t do too much as far as exploring goes today. I slept from 11pm til 3:30pm the next day! Lol That’s what jetlag will do to you! Well there are a few things that I know will take some time getting used to :
- Cold Showers: Anyone that knows me knows I LOVE my showers. I’ve gotten better at making them shorter but nothing is better after a hot and tiring day than a hot shower. That’s not going to be happening here. I’m grateful to have piped water nonetheless
- No internet: I check my emails and facebook constantly. So I’m gonna have to get used to not being in touch with everyone all the time
- Very simple food: The food here is not like the African (Sierra Leonean) food I am used to. It has a lot less flavor and seems to be more for the purpose of nutrition rather than taste.
- No phone: I am so used to texting and calling people to check on them and vice versa. So far, I haven’t been feeling home sick or lonely but I still got 2 months and 28 days to go! The other student on the trip with me is married so I kinda feel bad for her. She really misses her husband but he is really supportive so she’ll be ok. I’m glad we at least have each other to talk to while we’re here.
- Road laws (or lack thereof): I swear there are no traffic laws. Cars drive wherever there’s road space and the boda-bodas (motorbikes) drive along whatever left over space there is. Pedestrians having the right of way is a joke here.
Other than that things are going pretty good. The people are very friendly and so I think I will have a great experience.
PS I will start posting more pictures....give me a min to get over my jetlag...
Can't wait to see some photos!!!! I wish I were there. . . I know how you feel I felt the same way when I was in Haiti. . . . especially since it was my first time leaving the US and well in regards to culture shock. . . I was all good but it was so cute because all the kids called me "Blanc Blanc Blanc" which in French/Creole means WHITE. . .:) Oh my lot in life. . . the Snowflake or only white person in the crowd ha ha ha ha!
ReplyDeleteFor real BE SAFE on the streets. . YOU WILL GET HIT BY CAR. . . ha ha! HAVE FUN! Write everything down!

ReplyDeleteHahaha, dude seriously!! Same thing in India, cars have the right of way, lol. You're probably going to have your moments of frustration and missing the comforts of home, but you are going to take away so much more than that from this trip, not only learning about public health, but about yourself as a person. It will serve you so well in the future, for you and those around you. I'm glad you have another girl on the trip to help keep you sane, lol! Remember, don't eat anything random and only drink actually sealed bottled water! ;)
Thank you ladies SO much for your comments. I have been so lonely and its tought to think about how I'll make it thru these 3 months. I now you guys are true friends and hope to see you soon after I get back...THANKS!!
ReplyDeleteHaha I remember all of that. That's all of Africa and most of the developing countries right there. Wait till you get in the car and that jawn starts driving in incoming traffic!
ReplyDeleteNo seasoning? Now that is a shock....I know I sound extra as mess, but see that's why I pack maggi cubes and pepper when i'm traving, cause I can't play that mess. If i'm gonna eat it, it better taste like food. lol
Miss you much.
Mo
Thanks Mo! LOL...I shoulda brought some Lawry's seasoning wit me!
